Your web hosting cPanel account (or Control Panel) makes accessing your hosting features quite simple. If you've never worked with a cPanel account, it can seem a bit overwhelming. In reality, depending on what you're doing online, you don't need to know everything about all the tools and features found in your cPanel. But there are some basic features that you should know about. Understanding how these features work makes it easier to ask questions to your web hosting support team and will probably answer questions you have already.
The most important feature in your cPanel arguably is the File Manager section. This is where all your website files are stored. When you go into the file manager area you will see a list of files and most likely some documents. The most important folder in this first level is the public_html folder. All your website files must be uploaded directly into this folder. Technically you can upload files to your hosting account through your cPanel, but most cPanels only allow for one file to be uploaded at a time which can slow you down. It's always best to use an external FTP. The most basic thing to remember about your file manager is that all your website files are stored here inside the public_html folder.
Two other important areas in your cPanel are the add on domain and sub domain sections. This is where you go to create a space for new websites and their files. Add on domains require the purchase of a new domain name (or you can use one you already own). Navigate to the add on domain section and fill in the appropriate information about the domain, what user name you want and the password. Then the server will automatically create a new folder inside your public_html folder (found in the file manager). This newly created folder is where you must upload all your new website files for this add on domain. The same process is true for sub domains except you don't have to use a separate domain name.
Add on and sub domain folders look the same on the server when you view them in your file manager section, but they will look different to people viewing your website. Add on domains will look just like any other domain. No one will be able to tell the difference between a domain that's primary to your hosting account and one that is an add on (since you're using a new domain). Sub domains are connected to your primary or main domain and will look like this:
maindomain.com/subdomain
subdomain.maindomain.com
Either style works. Most hosting accounts will allow for only a certain number of add on domains to be created if any. Sub domains on the other hand usually are limitless. But you should always know how much space you're allowed on the server to ensure you're not maxing out your hosting account.
