How to Switch Your Web Hosting Provider

How to Switch Your web hosting Provider?

Many people stay with their web hosting company even when they are not happy with their services. This happens because either they are unsure of the process involved in switching web hosting providers or are afraid of prolonged periods of down time.

While it is true that switching your web hosting provider can be a real pain, as it involves moving your domain name and email account, but you can avoid down time on your web site while making a switch.

Follow these steps to make a smooth transition:

1. Create back-ups of all your files: Using a developmental tool such as Front Page. Download your files including HTML files and graphics. Keep the directory structure the same as it was on your web server while copying your files.

2. Select a new host: Do this only after you have analyzed your needs. Finding a good web host is not difficult. It is better to handle the change of domain name yourself rather than leaving it to the hosting company to ensure that your domain name doesn't get switched faster than you can get your files posted.

3. Transfer files to the new server: Using the IP address, upload your web site files to your new host. Set up the email accounts, even though they won't work immediately.

4. Initiate the name change on record: Using whatever registrar, you used to register your domain, and start the name change process. It is recommended to update the technical contact on your domain name as per your new host.

5. Monitor the change: You should get an e-mail confirming the change in your domain name. Once the change has been initiated, it takes 24 to 48 hours for the change to propagate through everyone's DNS server. This period is known as “propagation”. As soon as the propagation is complete, you are free to cancel the services of your previous web hosting provider.
